Brinjal Sells at 100/kg in Trichy.

In the wholesale markets and retail shops across the city, vegetable prices are soaring. The manapparai brinjal priced at Rs 100 per kg in retail and Rs 70 per kg in the wholesale market on 17th Nov 2015.

Mainly due to a dip in horticulture production in Trichy and adjacent districts and since the onset of the monsoon a week before Diwali, the vegetable prices have been going northward.

A resident of Palakkarai said, "It is unbelievable that brinjal has become an expensive stuff which most people can't afford."

The vegetable is an integral part of the south Indian cuisine, so the sudden hike in the price of brinjal has come as a shock to people. It is on other days it is priced at Rs 10 and normally priced at Rs 30 to Rs 35 per kg during the festive season.

Continuous rainfall for the past few days had an impact on the production. Poor supply from farmers in rural areas was the reason for the hike in the price. S Thangam, a vendor in Gandhi market said "We expect the price of brinjal to come down in a few days after the supply becomes normal."
